India’s young shooter Nischal won silver medal in women’s 50m rifle three position at the ‘ISSF’ World Shooting Championships. She won India’s second medal on the final day of the tournament. Nischal did this in his very first World Cup.
Nischal scored 458.0 points in the final match. She finished second behind Norway’s star shooter Janet Hague Duestedt. Duestad is the current European Champion of Air Rifle and has a total of 12 medals in ‘ISSF’ World Championships including five gold medals to her name. She was fourth in the Tokyo Olympics. Meanwhile, Nischal also broke the national record in the women’s three position qualifying round. “For the first time in the World Cup, I participated in the finals and managed to win a medal. So I am happy with this performance,” said Nischal.

Nischal qualified with 587 marks. Previous national record holders Anjum Mudgil and Ayushi Podar also managed to qualify for the qualifiers. Nischal scored 592 marks in the qualifying round and broke Anjum’s record. Anjum finished tenth with 586 marks. Ayushi finished 35th with 580 marks. Many top players participated in the finals. Apart from Duestedt, they included world champion Wanru Miao of China, Stefanie Grundsoi of Denmark, Olympian Sofia Ceccarello of Italy. Nischal gave Duested a good fight till the ankle. However, Duestad won the gold medal with 461.5 points on the strength of experience. India’s Gurpreet Singh finished 15th with 574 points in men’s 25m rapid fire pistol event. Hence, the Indian team won one gold and one silver medal in this tournament. Earlier, Elavenil Valarivan won gold in women’s 10m air rifle.
