Valued at $10 million, Messi’s World Cup jerseys to go up for auction | Football News

A set of six jerseys worn by Lionel Messi during Argentina’s 2022 World Cup victory will be auctioned in December, Sotheby’s announced Monday, estimating their value at $10 million.

The football star wore these shirts in the first half of the group stages against Saudi Arabia and Mexico, as well as later matches against Australia, the Netherlands and Croatia – and the final against France.

Argentina’s success in Qatar last year was the final feather in the forward’s cap, having failed to reach the championship in the previous four World Cups.

If the jerseys do indeed fetch more than $10 million, the sale could be the most valuable collection of sports memorabilia ever auctioned, Sotheby’s said.

The most expensive single jersey ever sold at auction was one worn by basketball great Michael Jordan during his NBA championship run with the Chicago Bulls in 1998.

It sold for $10.1 million last year.

Auction houses pay more attention to sports memorabilia in recent years, which is considered a growing market.

The shirts are being auctioned by US tech startup AC Momento, which helps athletes manage memorabilia collections.

Part of the money will be given to the UNICAS Project, an initiative with a children’s hospital in Barcelona that helps children with rare diseases.

The jerseys will be available for free to the public when they are auctioned, from November 30 to December 14.
