Schools closed in North India due to cold spell

A massive cold snap has gripped several parts of northern India, leading to extended school holidays in the states of Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Bihar etc. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has also issued “orange” and “yellow” warnings. in many parts of Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Haryana and Punjab.

Uttar Pradesh

Due to dense fog and a cold spell, the Department of Basic Education in Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh, has adjusted school hours from January 1, 2023. Classes will start at 10:00 AM and end at 2:00 PM as per the revised schedule. The timetables will remain in effect until January 10, 2023. Meanwhile, schools in 7 districts – including Meerut, Bareilly and Aligarh – opened today that were closed from December 26 to January 1. The timing is from 10am to 3pm. 9th and 12th graders only have class from 9am to 12pm


On December 22, 2022, the Delhi Education Authority issued a circular stating that all public schools under the authority in Delhi will be closed from January 1 to 15. During this period, all schools in grades 1 to 8 will remain closed. However, students in grades 9 to 12 take compulsory catch-up lessons for revision from 2 to 14 January.


The Directorate of School Education, under the government of Haryana, declared winter holidays for all public and private schools in the state from 1 to 15 January 2023 on December 28, 2022. However, classes for grades 10 and 12 will be held from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. because of jury exams.


The entire state of Bihar is also on orange alert, with the weather service predicting fog and cold snaps in many parts. Given the cold conditions, “Schools in Patna will remain closed for students up to and including grade 8 from January 2 to 7,” Patna’s district magistrate said today.


Schools in Punjab will remain closed until January 8. The Punjab government has extended the winter holiday.

“The Government of Punjab has extended winter holidays in all public, private and subsidized schools until January 8, 2023. School Education Minister @HarjotBains said all schools in the state will not open until January 2 as previously announced. Schools will now open on January 9, 2023.” the Punjab government tweeted on January 1, 2023.

Madhya Pradesh

The government of Madhya Pradesh had announced the closure of schools from December 25 to 31.


A 12-day winter break has been announced for schools in Rajasthan. This winter holiday for schools in Rajasthan started on December 5, 2022 and will last until January 5, 2023.

Jammu and Kashmir

A 10-day winter break has been announced for schools in Jammu and Kashmir from December 26, 2022 to January 4, 2023.
