Jude Bellingham was unable to come through this time and Real Madrid held Rayo Vallecano in their Madrid derby on Sunday to finish second in the Spanish league.
The 0-0 draw ended Madrid’s impressive record at home and kept them from joining Girona at the top of the standings after 12 rounds.
Girona moved three points clear with a 4-2 win at Osasuna on Saturday. Madrid would take the lead on goal difference by beating Rayo.
Madrid dominated most of the match but were unable to capitalize on their scoring opportunities, with neither Bellingham nor Vinícius Júnior able to break through the Rayo defence.
Vinícius had a goal disallowed for the outside in the 66th. Bellingham had a few good chances but couldn’t find the target.
Bellingham has been involved in more than half of Madrid’s goals this season and has scored 13 goals in his first 13 games since joining the Spanish powerhouse from Borussia Dortmund this season. In the four games Bellingham has failed to score for Madrid this season, the club have won just one – against Real Sociedad in September.
“We are upset with the result, but not with the way we played,” said Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti. “Sometimes you win a game you don’t deserve to win and sometimes you don’t win a game you deserve to win. We are still doing well in the standings. We are still in the fight. There is no drama.”
Madrid had won 11 straight against Rayo at home in the league. The Madrid clubs have not drawn in their last 21 league games, with 19 wins for Madrid and just two for Rayo.
As a result, Rayo’s unbeaten run in the league extended to an unprecedented eight games, with two wins and six draws. The club from the south of Madrid had no attempts during the match at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium.
It was Madrid’s sixth clean sheet in the league this season. The only loss in the other city derby was at Atletico Madrid.
Barcelona, who won 1-0 at Real Sociedad on Saturday, remained in third place, two points behind Madrid. Rayo was ninth.
The WILLIAMS brothers are successful
Brothers Iñaki and Nico Williams led Athletic Bilbao to a 3-2 win over Villarreal.
Nico set up a goal by Iñigo Ruiz de Galarreta two minutes into the game and scored the second in the 22nd. His older brother Iñaki added the team’s first-half winner in the 30th minute which was enough to end a two-game unbeaten run in the league.
The Basque club moved up to fifth place, four points behind fourth-placed Atletico Madrid, who lost 2-1 in Las Palmas on Friday.
13th-placed Villarreal ended their five-game league winless streak with a win over Granada in the previous round. The hosts threatened to get a point on Sunday through goals from Gerard Moreno in the 86th and Alexander Sorloth in the 87th.
VALENCIA EDGES GRANADA
Eighth-placed Valencia beat Granada 1-0 with Pepelu converting a penalty seven minutes into first-half injury time at the Mestalla Stadium.
Granada, who stayed in second place, complained loudly about the penalty after Granada defender Raúl Torrente made contact with Valencia’s Hugo Duro.
This was the third league game in a row for Granada, who have not won in nine consecutive league games.
ALMERIA STILL WITHOUT WIN
Almeria’s search for its first win of the season will continue after a 1-0 loss at Alaves.
Last place Almeria is the only team without a win after 12 games, with three draws and nine losses.
Alaves defender Aleksander Sedlar scored Alaves’ winner in the 79th, and a few minutes later he had to leave the field on the stretcher due to an apparent knee injury.
Alaves, who are in 14th place, have not won in seven consecutive league games.
