Pittsburgh creek flooding forces early morning evacuations and water rescue
PITTSBURG, California (KGO) — Overnight, dozens of Pittsburgh residents had to evacuate due to flooding.
The flood originated in Kirker Creek, which, according to Pittsburgh police, receded overnight, forcing evacuations just after 1 a.m.
It happened after a culvert responsible for keeping water off the road on Saturday broke from the pressure of too much water.

“Wednesday morning a sinkhole appeared above this pipe, so we believe from the photos we have seen and assessments of the installation that the top of the pipe is giving way and the ground is giving way. “up partially filled that storm runoff,” said John Samuelson, Antioch Public Director.
Residents of 19 homes along the creek and four units of Fox Creek Apartments on Harbor Street have been told to evacuate due to rising water.
The fire department’s rapid water rescue team was called and evacuated 12 residents from the area.
The driver of a car that tried to drive through the water also had to be rescued.

“Firefighters decided they had to go door to door telling them that the water had risen so high that we are recommending that they evacuate, so we knocked on 19 doors on Ventura and on Harbor and asked them to evacuate if they wanted and a handful did,” said Pittsburg Police Department Lieutenant James Terry.
Police say that even when it’s not raining, they’ve seen some of the biggest increases in Kirker Creek, all from runoff.
Since the culvert has been destroyed and the creek is still upside down, police don’t expect them to reopen Harbor Street and Stoneman Avenue anytime soon.
City officials say staff will be on site the next day and are asking people to stay away from the area. If you see standing water, don’t cross it, because you never know how deep it is.
