He has previously cited an inability to compete against the best players of this generation as one reason for setting a retirement date. “It’s hard work now at my age,” he admitted. “My grandson Matthew doesn’t want me to retire. He wants me to go on forever.

“But I said we’re going to set a date at the end of 2024 and I’ll be retiring from competitive darts then. When you are not performing as you can, it breaks your heart.

“At one tournament, people were saying things like: ‘Come on Phil.’ They had paid money to come and see you, and you are trying so hard. There was no sarcasm, no one was naughty, they were beautiful.
