Senior hockey in the city got a major boost when the 6-a-side Mumbai Masters Hockey Carnival was held at the Mumbai Hockey Association Ltd Stadium in Churchgate recently. Mumbai Customs won the eight-team tournament, defeating Mumbai Raje 10-9 via shootout in a hotly contested final on Sunday, November 5.
The highlight of the final was brothers Juned (Mumbai Customs) and Samir Coutinho (Mumbai Raje), playing in the opposition teams, scoring a hat-trick each. After the game was locked 6-6 at the end of full-time, with the sudden death score reading 9-9, customs forward Stanley Fernandes, who was also the organizer of the tournament, did well to save Mumbai keeper Raje Vijay Kannan hit present.
Customs goalkeeper Lincoln Taites then denied Mumbai Raje Savio Nayak’s attempt on goal to secure victory for his side.
Juned Mumba Magician was adjudged Player of the Carnival, while Girish Pimpale Raje was named the Carnival Magician.
The eight teams that participated were Mumbai Customs, Mumbai Raje, Mumbai Port Authority, Coorg Hawks, Savio Hockey, Sunday Sultans, Dadar Hockey and Navi Mumbai Hockey. Mumbai Customs won a cash prize of Rs 50,000 along with a glittering trophy and Mumbai Raje was awarded Rs 30,000. Mumbai Port Authority won the Challenger Trophy with a cash prize of Rs 20,000 and Savio Hackey won the Faith Trophy with a cash prize of Rs 5,000.
“For the first time, so many former Indian hockey stars of the past were in action, so it was great to compete,” said Albuquerque. “The idea is to have a second edition of this Mumba Masters Championship and we hope to have a third edition in the next six to eight months,” said Stanley.
