Masked men attempt to abduct Evanston teenager in broad daylight, police say
A community is in shock after two men attempted to kidnap an 18-year-old woman in the suburb of Evanston on Monday.
Authorities say the incident happened just before 4 p.m. in the 1200 block of Fowler Avenue
The woman told police she was walking through the neighborhood on her way to work when she saw a gray four-door sedan approaching. This car parked across the street and two persons got out of the car and approached it.
According to police, the suspects then grabbed the teen and lifted her up.
She was able to fight back and free herself, and ran to a nearby store where she works, police said.
Tsedeke Handero, who lives nearby, was shocked by the incident.
“It’s worrying. I’ve never heard of anything like that here,” Handero said. “It’s the first time.”
sergeant. Sophia Syed says the teenager is shocked by the incident and police are working as hard as they can to investigate and take the suspects into custody.
“Obviously something that, I can only imagine, was very scary for her,” she said. “It’s very scary for the community, so we’re doing our best to get it done as soon as possible.”
“You do have to think twice about releasing your kids,” resident Kyle Mason added.
Police are looking for CCTV footage of the incident, as they have only released a vague description of the suspects. One wore a gray hoodie, black pants and a black ski mask, while the other wore all-black clothing and a black ski mask.
Authorities are also advising residents to do exactly what the teen did: retaliate if they find themselves in a similar situation.
“We advise you if you are in a situation where you could be kidnapped and taken to another location to fight for your safety, to make noise, to try to escape, to draw attention to yourself” said Syed. “It’s something that hopefully someone thinks they should call the police and come and help you.”
