Cops in Southern California have killed a stabbing suspect who ran from them on his stumps

Law enforcement in suburban Los Angeles shot dead a stabbed suspect who tried to flee on what was left of his amputated legs. The incident has sparked new outrage over police brutality just weeks after a Tennessee man was beaten to death during a traffic stop.

Police say they have identified Anthony Lowe Jr. encountered when responding to a knife call in Huntington Park, California, south of Los Angeles, last Thursday afternoon. The 36-year-old black man was armed with a long butcher knife and allegedly stabbed another person without cause, seriously injuring him.

Lowe had jumped out of his wheelchair by the time officers arrived. As they tried to restrain him, groping the amputee twice in vain, he began to run away from them on his stumps. Video footage posted on social media appears to show two officers walking towards Lowe as he walks away from them. At one point, he turns back to the police as he continues to flee and appears to be brandishing a knife at them.

Another officer arrived on the scene and police fired at least eight shots at the suspect, fearing he would throw his knife at them. Police then stood over Lowe with guns drawn until one of the officers put his hands behind his back.

Lowe’s relatives denounced the shooting at a news conference outside the Huntington Park Police Department on Monday. They said Lowe was distraught over the recent loss of his legs and could not pose a serious threat to officers. Both legs were amputated at the knees.

“My son was murdered” Dorothy Lowe spoke about the incident. Ellakenyada Gorum, a cousin of the deceased suspect, said: “You knew your life was not in danger. He runs on his limbs. How cool-headed can they be? »

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the shooting. At least one of the three officers involved in the confrontation with Lowe turned out to be black.

The incident follows the shooting of Tire Nichols in Memphis earlier this month. Five black police officers have been charged with murder in the death of Nichols, who was also black. This case sparked protests against police brutality in the United States.
