Honor Among Thieves Trailer Delivers Chaotic Banter and Easter Eggs
Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves just received a new trailer. Following the initial reveal at San Diego Comic-Con last year, this new trailer offers a closer look at villains, tons of Easter eggs, and chaotic events that unfold as if players rolled multiple 1s on the dice. Originally slated for a July 2021 release, the feature film adaptation suffered multiple delays, thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic and other internal issues, before finally settling for a 2023 release. Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is coming in theaters worldwide on March 31.
The Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves trailer aptly opens by depicting the stark contrast in personality between the main characters; Holga the Barbarian (Michelle Rodriguez) brutally beats up henchmen, while cowardly bard Edgin (Chris Pine) doesn’t get her hands dirty trying to cut the handcuff rope by vigorously rubbing it against the stairs. “You know what? I think there are probably steeper stairs elsewhere,” he shouts, as Holga continues to play solo with the bandit team. We are then reminded of the film’s premise, where Edgin leads a group of rogue adventurers on a fantastic journey in search of an ancient relic A mysterious magical horn that our heroes themselves accidentally gave to the wrong person, unleashing the “greater evil than the world has ever known”.
“The Red Mages have created an army of the undead,” Xenk (Régé-Jean Page), a very serious paladin, describes the situation to our heroes, who begin to conjure up ideas to complete the mission. The Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves trailer then focuses on each of their abilities – Sophia Lillis (It: Chapter Two) is Doric the shape-shifter, adept at transforming into various animals, allowing him to navigate even small crevices. Meanwhile, Judge Smith (Detective Pikachu) plays Simon the wizard, who is extremely unpredictable in the way he casts spells.
We then get a glimpse of their battle against one of Thay’s Red Wizards, Sofina (Daisy Head), who conjures a ghostly fleshy hand to grab Doric. As previously reported, the Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves trailer is full of Easter eggs for fans – some of which were detailed in an IGN interview with co-directors Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley. First, we have a fat version of the Embershard. “Embershad is traditionally known as a glutton. And so we really wanted to explore that idea for one of our dragons,” Daley explained. “We wanted each of our dragons to be special in their own right because people know what dragons look like.” Dark Souls players, on the other hand, should be able to recognize the Mimic Chest which, when activated, opens wide with a set of sharp teeth.
The film seems to draw heavily on the playful character of the tabletop role-playing game of the same name. It also stars Hugh Grant as Forge Fitzwilliam, the scheming thief, who can be seen befriending our heroes before coming up with his own agenda. The actor previously suggested that the film had a “Monty Python sensibility” in terms of humor.
Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves will be released in cinemas worldwide on March 31. In India, the film will also be available in Tamil and Telugu.
