Berlin also confirms that it will allow other countries to send German-made armor to Ukraine

The German government has approved the delivery of Leopard 2 main battle tanks to Ukraine, it announced on Wednesday. Germany and other European countries must provide such weapon systems.

“This decision follows our well-known line of supporting Ukraine as best we can. We act in a closely coordinated manner internationally.” Chancellor Olaf Scholz said this in a statement.

The German Armed Forces will send 14 Leopard 2A6 tanks from its own stock to “fast” establishment of two tank battalions in the Ukrainian army, the government said.

The move opens the door for countries like Poland to transfer German-made armor to Ukraine. The fact that Germany did not quickly give permission after other countries announced their intentions exposed it to criticism. Warsaw threatened one “small coalition” for potential tank donors and hinted that this would suffice “the good thing” regardless of Berlin’s position.

German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius teased the impending decision at a joint press conference with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg on Tuesday. The official suggested that other countries identify the tanks they want to supply to Ukraine and begin training Ukrainian crews, pending a nod from Berlin.

Scholz would have been reluctant to see German tanks on the battlefield in Ukraine unless the United States had first taken the lead by agreeing to provide its own Abrams armor. The Pentagon claimed its tanks were too expensive and complex to operate and maintain to be of much use to Ukraine.

The CNN news network claimed on Tuesday that the Biden administration was about to override the objection and a “considerable number” from American war machines to Ukraine.

Russia has warned that supplying heavier weapon systems to Ukraine will only prolong the conflict and risk escalation. Moscow is pursuing vital security objectives in Ukraine and will not abandon them despite resistance, Russian officials have said.

“Like a decision [is made] to transfer the M1 Abrams to Kiev will undoubtedly destroy US tanks, such as [will] all other samples of NATO military equipment’, The Russian ambassador to the United States, Anatoly Antonov, said that earlier in the day.
