Garland issues statement on classified Biden documents
Aides to President Joe Biden found secret token documents in two locations at his home in Wilmington, Delaware, the office of White House counsel said in a statement Thursday.
The documents were in a storage area in the garage and then in an adjoining room, the statement said.
Biden responded to a question about the statement Thursday morning in response to comments about the economy. When asked by a reporter what he thought about keeping classified documents in his garage “next to his Corvette,” Biden said:
“My Corvette is in a locked garage, okay? So it’s not like they’re on the street.
The documents were found after a search of the president’s home in Wilmington and Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. No classified documents were found in Rehoboth, the statement said.
The documents were found “between personal and political papers,” the statement said.
Biden’s lawyers concluded their assessment of the Delaware homes on Wednesday evening.
“As in the case of the Penn-Biden Center, the Justice Department was immediately notified and attorneys arranged for the Justice Department to take possession of these documents,” the statement said.
A person familiar with the situation said after the statement was released that in the case of the classified documents originally discovered at the Penn-Biden Center, Biden’s lawyers first notified the National Archives — not the Department of Justice – who in turn informed the Ministry of Justice. . .
Biden’s lawyers followed “proper protocol” by first notifying the records of the first batch of classified documents, the person said, but because the Justice Department then got involved and the president’s lawyers then contacted had included them, in the second instance the lawyers informed the Ministry of Justice.
The White House said it would continue to cooperate with the Justice Department review.
Biden read much of the same statement prepared by the law firm when he spoke to reporters Thursday morning.
CNN reported Wednesday that Biden’s legal team found another batch of classified documents during a search that began after classified documents were discovered in his former Washington think tank office in early November.
