Bruno Fernandes scored a stoppage-time goal to give Manchester United a 1-0 win over Fulham in the Premier League on Saturday and piled the pressure on manager Erik ten Hag twice.
Fernandes capitalized on a poor clearance by compatriot Joao Palhinha to curl a low finish into the bottom corner from the edge of the area just seconds into added time at Craven Cottage.
United bounced back from 3-0 back-to-back defeats to Manchester City and Newcastle in the past week, leaving Ten Hag facing his biggest crisis since taking over in the summer 2022.
“With the goal, you could see everyone’s belief, fighting for that ball,” Fernandes said after another tepid display at United, who have lost eight of their first 15 games in all competitions this season.
“It’s really important. We know the position we are in… we need to get points to start building something. We have to start somewhere because we have big games coming up.”
Next up is a crucial Champions League game at FC Copenhagen on Wednesday.
“We need to show the same passion and quality that we showed today,” said Fernandes. “I know we still have more than we showed today.”
Scott McTominay thought he had ended United’s goalless streak when he headed home Alejandro Garnacho’s free-kick in the eighth minute. After a long delay to check the goal, Harry Maguire was adjudged to be offside when Christian Eriksen hit the free-kick.
Maguire did not touch the ball but was deemed to be interfering with play as he narrowly missed the free kick before reaching Garnacho.
After the first half, Fulham improved after the break and went close through Harry Wilson and Palhinha – who drew a good save from Andre Onana – and then Rodrigo Muniz.
The game looked like it was going to a final until Fernandes’ intervention.
