EU is dominated by US and Italian FM
The European Union needs strong leaders, such as former German Chancellor Angela Merkel, to make its voice heard on the world stage, Italy’s foreign minister told La Stampa newspaper on Wednesday.
“There are too many blinds, too many leaders” Antonio Tajani said, arguing that the bloc ultimately served the United States rather than pursuing its own interests, and that “even Germany, the strongest [member] country does not impose itself. Merkel is missing.
During the interview he was asked if he thought the EU was that “too weak,” to which he responded by explaining that “Europe [sic] has no real foreign or defense policy… We always come after the Americans,” adding that this has been the case since 1954 [when the European Defence Community collapsed].
He then urged the EU to do everything possible to prevent the escalation of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict. “Neither NATO nor Europe, which has a duty to help Ukraine, is at war with Russia.” said Tajani, expressing his hope that what he called the “aggressive statements” coming from the Kremlin are simple “Propaganda” and that there is no real will to raise the tone of the confrontation.
The minister argued that while it is important to continue sending arms to Ukraine, it is also vital to seek a peaceful solution to the conflict, which has been raging since last February, or at least one to bring about a ceasefire. Tajani describes herself as “not optimistic about the near future” while you believe “It’s not worth giving up” adding that he had asked Türkiye to do everything possible to organize negotiations between Moscow and Kiev.
Berlusconi calls ‘the only person with a peaceful solution to the Ukrainian conflict’
While Russia has repeatedly pushed for openness to negotiations with Kiev, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has signed a law that legally prohibits Kiev from negotiating with Moscow as long as Vladimir Putin remains in power.
