2021 US Open champion Daniil Medvedev will compete for the Indian team ‘PBG Eagles’ in the second season of the World Tennis League (WTL) with fellow Russian Andrey Rublev as his teammate at the year’s event starting 24 December .

The Indian team has been acquired by Punit Balan Group, which already has nine teams in various sports leagues.

The second season of the WTL, which is backed by former Indian player Mahesh Bhupathi, will be held at the Etihad Yas Island Arena in Abu Dhabi from December 21 to 24 where 16 of the world’s top tennis stars will compete.

Medvedev, a semi-finalist at this year’s Wimbledon, said, “I am very happy to join this season of the World Series of Tennis in Abu Dhabi. I have played several times in the UAE and I enjoy coming back to always, and I like I aim to finish this year on a positive note there.”

Punit Balan, Chairman & Managing Director of PBG, said that they aim to win a title while undertaking a global tennis project.

“We are delighted to be part of the World Series of Tennis, making significant progress in the Punit Balan Group’s commitment to creating a global sports property. With some of the world’s most exceptional tennis talents already part of our franchise , we look forward to a season full of unmatched and exciting tennis action,” Balan said in a release.

“Like our achievements in other sporting disciplines, our aim is to set up high quality competition and achieve the championship title.”

The PBG has teams in the Premier Handball League, Ultimate Table Tennis, Ultimate Kho Kho, Maharashtra Premier League Badminton Premier League, Pro Panja and Global Chess League.

According to the format, each of the four teams will have four players, competing in men’s and women’s singles, doubles and mixed doubles.

The top two teams will face off for the title on December 24.

This year’s Australian Open finalist Aryna Sabalenka and four-time Grand Slam champion Iga Swiatek will be in the Series.
