Chief Selector Pramodaya Wickramasinghe on Friday alleged that Sri Lanka’s disastrous show at the ongoing ODI World Cup was the result of “conspiracy from outside”. The Sri Lankan cricket team returned home early Friday morning from India after losing by five wickets in the final group match against New Zealand in Bengaluru. Pressing for reasons for the poor performance, Wickramasingha, a member of the 1996 World Cup winning team, said: “Give me two days to reveal everything about it. This was the result of an outside conspiracy.

“It is very sad, I am taking responsibility,” he told reporters at the airport.

Sri Lanka recorded their worst World Cup performance since 1992, winning just two of their nine matches.

The former champions were decimated by a series of injuries, which necessitated replacements outside the original squad. The result is even a change in the middle of the tournament captain.

Their disastrous display against India, where they were all out for 56, sparked a backlash at home.

The sports minister then fired the governing body, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), which was then reinstated by the appeals court, deepening the crisis.

On Thursday, a coalition government and opposition motion in parliament demanded the resignation of the management of the SLC.

The government, which is divided over the Minister’s decision to sack the SLC management board, came out with a report, proposing a brand new constitution for the governing body with a new voting structure to appoint office bearers.
