A code violation marked the beginning of the end for Caroline Garcia in her surprise loss to Poland’s Magda Linette in the fourth round.

The world number 4 bombed the Australian Open with an outright defeat to Linette, who will therefore make her first appearance in the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam.

The key moment came in the second set at 30-15 when Garcia returned a long serve.

She cursed loudly in French, taking the wrath of the chair umpire who, despite her apology, handed her a code violation moments after the overflow.

Visibly frustrated, Garcia objected to the penalty and questioned the referee’s decision.

“Some players say it 15 times a day, this is the first one and I already have one (offense),” said Garcia.

From that moment on, Linette was untouchable. The world No. 45 went wild to claim victory in straight sets – 7-6(3), 6-4.

Linette couldn’t believe the result, stumbling through the post-match interview with Jelena Dokic.

“I don’t really believe in it,” Linette said.

“I don’t know. I still can’t quite believe it. I don’t know what happened.

‘I’m speechless, really. I don’t know what to say. I don’t want to say I didn’t expect it because when I walked onto the field I was sure how well I was playing.

“Obviously she is such a great and tough opponent, especially on the big stage.

“I knew it was going to be super tough and I’m just glad I stayed calm during the first set and managed to come back.”

After the elimination of Iga Swiatek in the fourth round, Linette remains Poland’s best hope of a Grand Slam victory.

The 30-year-old will face world number 31 Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic after beating Shuai Zhang.
