2 dead, 5 injured in Dan Ryan freeway crash, authorities say

A violent multi-vehicle accident killed two people and seriously injured at least five others on the Dan Ryan Freeway on Sunday morning, officials said.

The express lanes on the inbound side of the Dan Ryan were closed between 67e Street and 43ed Street for more than seven hours due to the accident, according to Illinois State Police, but reopened just before 9:30 a.m.

Illinois State Police say the crash happened nearly 51st Street just before 2am Sunday. While no details were available about the cause of the accident, two vehicles were involved and at least seven people were taken to local hospitals.

According to the Chicago Fire Department, two people were transported to nearby Insight Hospital and Medical Center and both were pronounced dead.

Five others were taken to Stroger and the University of Chicago Medical Center, and according to firefighters, all were initially in the red (severe to critical) after the crash.

The investigation is ongoing and no further details are available.
