Best of 2022: Surprise of the year
There is practically no shortage of surprises in the gaming industry, and this year was no different. Today’s category will be dedicated to them, specifically the pleasant ones, because for the others we have prepared the Disappointment of the Year category. Come and see with us a selection of the three cutest pieces that surprised us this year!
3. place: Need for Speed Unbound
Need for Speed Unbound had an ungrateful and enviable position at the same time. We didn’t expect much from the new installment of the once popular series, in fact we thought it probably wouldn’t turn out that way. The last few installments have disappointed us for various reasons, and the crown of the best arcade racing has clearly rested on the head of the Forza Horizon series.
However, the lack of pressure clearly benefited the experienced developers from Criterion. Unbound is a great success, it’s not too overdone, the racing model is great and the combination of realistic graphics with wild anime effects works surprisingly well too.
It’s just a seriously fun game, as you read in Patrik’s recent review. And we do not expect that in any case. Hopefully this trend will continue in the future!
2nd place: Repentance
One of the biggest surprises of this year, that is probably clear. Unlike Need for Speed Unbound, Pentiment did not surprise us with its qualities, but simply by being there. The creators from Obsidian, led by Josh Sawyer, found time and space among all the other projects for an inconspicuous, but the most amazing RPG, which almost everyone in the editorial office fell in love with.
Peniment is an excellent conversational experience that revolves around the investigation of a series of murders. At first glance, the game captures you with a unique audiovisual page that you simply cannot take your eyes off of. And when you dive into it, you will find that the font work here is not only adequately contemporary, but also interesting and above all serves to deepen the gameplay experience. Yes, even (un)ordinary fonts can matter.
Although Pentiment is quite long and sometimes the pace is a little slow, but overall it is an excellent original piece with soul, heart and visuals that you simply do not see anywhere else.
1st place: Vampire Survivor
Another roguelike? Ziiiiv. But be careful, here more than anywhere else, you have to make a first impression out the door and slam it! Vampire survivors will hook you in minutes and will not let go. It’s not just about how addictive the game is, it’s also extremely satisfying. You will have an incredible portion of catchy entertainment in it. You just don’t want to tear yourself away from the game, but at the same time you don’t have to sit with it for long hours. It can satisfy you even on the desktop for a few minutes.
And why is it such a surprise that we were stripped of the gold medal? Well, Vampire Survivors doesn’t look very good at first, it looks like a 20 year old thing. The premise of another indie roguelike didn’t particularly excite us at first either. In short, none of us looked forward to the new vampires.
The news brought us all to our knees even more, it took our breath away and completely shocked us. However, it got us so hooked that after a bit of wrangling over the review, we agreed on an extraordinary step: More people simply write it! This is pretty much the perfect definition of the surprise of the year.
