3.5 GHz frequencies for 5G auctioned after summer 2023
Minister Micky Adriaansens expected to be able to auction the 3.5 GHz frequencies for 5G after the summer of 2023. They can then be used in early 2024 at the earliest.
Inmarsat still uses the 3.5 GHz band for satellite traffic. Because the 5G network of providers at 3.5 GHz interferes too much with this satellite traffic, telecommunications companies cannot yet use this frequency band. However, Inmarsat wants to move the ground station in Friesland to Greece, but that move will not be completed until January 2023 at the earliest.
The National Frequency Plan must also be amended first. Initially, the minister wanted to make one block of 100MHz available to companies and organizations that want to establish local networks. The Ministry has now decided to divide the single block of 100MHz into two separate blocks of 50MHz, above and below in the 3.5GHz frequency range.
The higher speeds and new services promised with the arrival of 5G will only come with the 3.5 GHz band, with the highest speeds in the 26 GHz range.
