Christmas trees – It takes 5 to 10 years to reach your home

In order for the New Year’s tree to reach your home, a long path of its cultivation of as much as five to ten years is required, while respecting strict ecological standards. Unlike the countries in our immediate surroundings, Serbia does not have a developed production of Christmas trees, as well as their distribution.

In Croatia, the production of this conifer is higher due to a much higher demand in the market, bearing in mind the greater need for greening of public areas and tourist destinations. According to experts, the reasons for the lower production of these trees in the Republic of Serbia are, in addition to the small needs of the market, low living standards and underdeveloped ecological awareness of citizens.

The New Year holidays are accompanied by indispensable props, and one of them is, of course, a Christmas tree, usually spruce or white spruce (Picea abies), which is also the cheapest.

We have been hearing for years about how it is legal to only buy Christmas trees with solid wood, and that Christmas trees cut without solid wood are cut down illegally.

“If someone wants a New Year’s tree cut, there is a production dedicated to this, that is, there are conifers that are cut during the planned thinning, which are done with the aim of growing and taking care of young conifer forests, and they can be used . as such, of course only with appropriate prescribed documentation, with the aim of cutting down the New Year’s trees”, says Boris Ivanović from “Srbijašum”.

According to the current Law on Forests, the cutting of those forests owned by the Republic of Serbia is strictly prohibited and punishable. As for private forest owners, they have the right to cut in their forests, after notification to the local forest administration, so that forestry technicians mark the trees for cutting according to the established procedure.

In larger nurseries that produce firs and spruces, they point out that the exclusive production of these types of conifers is not a profitable business, and that their possible export to EU countries is not organized. By the way, according to available data, more than 70 million Christmas trees are sold on the EU market before the New Year and Christmas holidays.

Growing a Christmas tree is not easy at all, starting from planting to the final product. The work takes many years, it requires a lot of work, and for the Christmas tree to reach a height of 100 cm, you need to wait 5 years. Also, in addition to meeting the requirements on the PH value of the land with the addition of appropriate peat, it is necessary to meet the climatic conditions with a minimum altitude of 380 meters.

When we talk about quality seeds, they are often bought from Slovenia, and for some species from America and even from the Caucasus. However, despite the difficult production conditions, a large number of producers do not give up on this business, because, as they say, they have invested a lot in seeds and land. All potential producers of Christmas trees are advised to plant on an area of no less than one or two hectares of land.

These days, Christmas trees can be found in markets all over Serbia. Their price generally varies from 2,000 to 7,000 dinars, while for those produced in nurseries, it is necessary to allocate from 2,000 to 15,000 dinars.

For those customers who have decided to buy a Christmas tree for sure, it is recommended to water them regularly with water at room temperature. After the holidays, the Christmas tree needs to be adapted to the conditions for transplantation, which implies a period of adaptation.

“It is better to leave the Christmas tree in the corridor or in a room that is not heated for a few days, and when the ground is not frozen, that is when the outside temperature is above a degree Celsius , to be transplanted,” experts advise.
