This bill will be presented in the Rajya Sabha on Thursday. After passing from there, it will be sent to President Draupadi Murmu for signature. This will become law after getting the approval of the President. The Women’s Reservation Bill is also the first bill passed in the Lok Sabha of the new Parliament.
According to the Women’s Reservation Bill, 33% reservation will be implemented for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies. Out of 543 seats in the Lok Sabha, 181 will be reserved for women. This reservation will last for 15 years. After this, if the Parliament wishes, it can extend its period. This reservation will be applicable for directly elected public representatives. That means it will not apply to Rajya Sabha and Legislative Councils of states.

Home Minister Amit Shah answered the opposition’s questions
Before voting on the Women’s Reservation Bill, Home Minister Amit Shah answered the opposition’s questions. Shah said that when Narendra Modi was the Chief Minister of Gujarat, he gave the slogan of Beti Padhao Beti Bachao across the country. He said that he created awareness in Gujarat. This improved the sex ratio. Amit Shah said that the benefit of Beti Bachao Beti Education was that on one hand the sex ratio improved, on the other hand there was a 37 percent dropout ratio in primary education in Gujarat, but when Modiji became the Prime Minister, this dropout ratio came down to 0.7 percent.
Rahul Gandhi said – This bill is incomplete without OBC quota
Congress MP Rahul Gandhi took part in the debate in the Lok Sabha on the Women’s Reservation Bill. During this, Rahul Gandhi also demanded to include OBC in this bill (Women’s Reservation Bill). He said that the Women’s Reservation Bill is incomplete without OBC reservation. Rahul Gandhi said, “In my view, this bill can be implemented today itself, but it has not been prepared for the purpose of moving forward.”
What did the Law Minister say?
On the Women’s Reservation Bill, Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal said that questions are being raised regarding delimitation. In sections 8 and 9 of the delimitation it is said that determination is done only by giving numbers. If we go into these technical things then you want this bill to get stuck. But we will not let this bill get stuck. The Supreme Court has decided that the subject of women’s reservation is both horizontal and vertical. Now delimitation and census cannot be done immediately. You are saying to give it immediately.

Women’s reservation bill was stuck for three decades
The proposal for women’s reservation in Parliament was stuck for 3 decades. For the first time in 1974, the Committee to Assess the Status of Women raised this issue. After this, in 2010, the Manmohan government got the 33% reservation bill for women passed in the Rajya Sabha with majority. But then SP and RJD opposed the women’s reservation bill. Both the parties had threatened to withdraw support from the then UPA government. After this the bill was not introduced in the Lok Sabha.
Even if the Women’s Reservation Bill becomes law, what is the problem?
According to a top government source, women’s reservation may be possible from the 2029 Lok Sabha elections. There is a long constitutional process to implement reservation. This bill does not require the approval of 50 percent of the state legislatures. That means it will become a law after it is passed by the Parliament and approved by the President. But the government will first notify the rules of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). After this the census work will start. After that the Delimitation Commission will complete the work of delimitation of Lok Sabha and Assembly. The Women’s Reservation Act will come into force only after the census and delimitation process is completed.
