Brand new trailer for brand new Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire a movie dropped today, and for a while he doesn’t like that it’s a reimagining of older stuff. The trailer, teaser, has a lot to unpack. First of all, we have familiar faces, like Dan Akroyd, Bill Murray and Ernie Hudson. There is also a new villain, but who is he?
The trailer begins in the middle of summer in New York City. It is sweltering hot, and some people spend the day relaxing at the beach. Suddenly, everything stops and a cold comes out into the ocean.
It turns out to be an ice storm that causes spikes of frozen spears to appear all over the city. Honestly, it feels pretty original. Look:
The villain is called the Death Chill, and he can kill people through fear alone and freeze them to death. We don’t see the supernatural force itself, but we see the destruction it wreaks on the city.
This is the fifth film in the franchise, and the first time there is a completely original bad guy for the ‘busters to put on. The absence of franchise controllers Gozer or Zuul allows the film to move in a new direction, and move in a new direction it has! This is not your parents (grandparents’?) Ghostbusters.
Ray Ackroyd explains that when people get deathly cold they can’t move and the last thing they feel is their tear ducts freezing. You. That sounds uncomfortable, to say the least. In the trailer, Oswalt seems genuinely haunted by the idea of a ghost that scares you to death.
Here’s a summary, courtesy Entertainment Weekly:
“Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire The Spengler family gets to return to where it all started, the iconic New York City firehouse, to team up with the original Ghostbusters, who have developed a top-secret research lab to take broken ghosts to the next level. But when an ancient artifact is discovered unleashing an evil force, Ghostbusters, both old and new, must come together to protect their home and save the world from a second Ice Age.”
Newcomers (to the franchise) Kumail Nanjiani and Patton Oswalt also appear in the trailer, and we see all the old favorites too, like: Mckenna Grace as Phoebe; Finn Wolfhard as Trevor; Celeste O’Connor as Lucky; Carrie Coon as Callie; Logan Kim as Podcast and Paul Rudd as Mr. Grooberson.
There is no release date for the film yet.
