The trouble with ensemble films is that for the most part everyone doesn’t have much to do. The Avengers he consistently did this by sidelining Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) and giving Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) insensitive romantic lines.
DaCosta’s nephew The Marvels, however, there is no such question. The three female leads are just as important as the next, with each character fulfilling their arc. Carol (Brie Larson) insists that she is a secondary villain. Kamala (Iman Vellani) learns what happens when you meet your heroes. And Monica (Teyonah Parris) finally finds closure for her abandonment issues. When she was just a child, her favorite aunt made her promise that she would be back before she knew it and never see her again. Monica had to endure all her mother’s illness alone and find her inner strength.
Carol admitted that she was at fault in how she handled things which was exactly what Monica needed to achieve closure, but that was not the end of her story in The Marvels.
What is the fate of Monica when The Marvels end?
Ever since Monica exposed the aptly named Wanda (Elizabeth Olsen) as a hex witch, she’s been adjusting to her new normal day. Her photosensitive powers allow her to pass through materials and produce her own light. This change connects her with Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) as he runs SABER But as often happens in the MCU, with great power comes great responsibility.
Monica learns this faster than most after she and the leader of The Marvels battle the Kree, Dar-Benn (Zawe Ashton). In the Kree’s attempt to solve the environmental problems on their home planet of Hala, she tears a hole in time and space. This portal leads into another dimension and to another instance of the Multiverse, which has so far fascinated the MCU.
Monica is the only person who can absorb Carol and Kamala’s energy to bring the rift back together. Carol and Kamala agree, not realizing this is the end of the line for Monica, at least Earth-616. As she heals the rift with her abilities, the entry point closes around her, and she admits that she always knew this would be a one-way trip. Carol races to save her, but as Monica seals the portal, she disappears – taking her with her.
As devastated as the characters are at losing an integral part of their team, this does not necessarily mean that she has gone astray (one of the rare parts of the film that has logical support). Carol and Kamala are both determined to see their friend again, and for good reason. There are already multiple universes established in the MCU, and being stuck in one isn’t automatically a death sentence.
Monica affects to seal the rift and loses consciousness. When she wakes up, she finds herself in a ward, with someone by her side who looks exactly like her mother. But when Maria (Lashana Lynch) takes off her sheath and reveals herself to be the superhero Binary, Monica realizes she’s in another world. This revelation is just another link to the future of the MCU and an interesting hint at the future of the X-Men. But it also means this won’t be the last we see of Captain Rambeau (or Pulsar, or Photon, or Professor Marvel—hopefully she’ll have picked a superhero name by the next time she’s in the MCU).
