UFC 283 Results Highlights: Jamahal Hill beats Glover Teixeira to win vacant main event belt
Check back later in this post to see who won UFC283 Main Event organized by Jeunesse Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
This post covers the vacant light heavyweight title fight between former champion Glover Teixeira and up and coming contender Jamahal Hill. At UFC 282 in December, Jan Błachowicz and Magomed Ankalaev fought for the vacant 205-pound belt, but after the contest resulted in a split tie, Dana White announced that Glover and Jamahal would then fight for the crown.
At 43, Glover is a seasoned vet who is as versatile as can be, with his biggest downfall being his inevitable struggle with fatherhood. Teixeira had a wonderful run to the top, finding ways to train his younger teammates to finally get a world title. If he wants to get the gold back, he must first defeat a young, hungry lion in Hill. Jamahal has only lost once in his career (when Paul Craig took his arm home) and since then has had a trio of brutal knockouts. Speed kills, and Hill certainly has it. It’s a good thing, too, because he’ll need everything to avoid Glover’s salty dog tactics.
The early prelims begin at 5:30pm ET/2:30pm PT, followed immediately by the regular prelims. Both shows can be streamed on ESPN+. The PPV main card is scheduled for 10pm ET/7pm PT and is available to purchase on ESPN+.
Jamahal Hilldef. Glover Teixeira by unanimous decision (50-44 x3): Light Heavyweight Title
Teixeira didn’t take long to close the gap, but Hill defended well and stayed upright. Hill used his long kicks to keep Glover out. Hill followed with his straight shots, still making the most of his length. As Teixeira was starting to run his own boxing, he accidentally poked Hill in the eye. Jamahal did not take long to recover, allowing the fight to resume.
We got another win in the first minute of the second round, but it was from Hill. After a short break, the fight starts again. Hill then wobbled Teixeira with a big head and then swarmed the former champion. Teixeira was king, rolling well with the punches but some flush uppercuts landed. Then Glover Hill stabbed with a huge counter to get back into the fight. Then came Glover’s takedown with plenty of time left on the clock. He controlled a bit from the top but Hill defended well and worked her way up. What a round!
Teixeira went straight for the takedown to open the third round, but Hill fought hard to avoid it. Hill returned to the head and wobbled Teixeira again. Glover fell and Hill climbed on top to hammer away. When Teixeira started to defend from below, Hill wisely let him get up. Somehow Teixeira kept pushing forward and kept hitting.
Teixeira found a way to close the gap to start the fourth round, but Hill again defended the takedown. In one room, Hill began to open up with some volume. He was still launching his headkick and following up with his straight punches. As the lap slowed, Hill began emptying his gas tank. He landed blow after blow to his head and knee to knee to the body. The referee could have stopped the fight at any time, but Glover did it at the bell.
The doctor came in to check on Teixeira before the start of the fifth round and deemed it fit to continue. The round started and Teixeira scored a takedown with four minutes to go. The former champion made his way into the full mount, but Hill escaped through the back door to get to the top. The fight went back and forth but Teixeira couldn’t find a much needed shutout.
