Netflix has a strong reputation for their comedy specials, not only paying big names for exclusive content but also giving rising stars a huge audience to prove themselves.
Well, a stand-up comedy star who two years ago was sleeping in dirt cheap motels between gigs can become the current King of Netflix. According to FlixPatrol, Matt Rife‘s stand-up comedy special Natural Selection yes number one right now in the domestic Netflix charts (and in the UK and Australia too).
Rife’s profile has risen steadily in recent years, though his 2022 TikTok clip “The Lazy Hero” saw his career skyrocket, resulting in millions of followers, and a series of sold-out shows that hit they Ticketmaster website.
Natural Selection shot at the DAR Constitution Hall in Washington DC and finds Rife delivering some killer content about social media trolling, childhood fears and the horror of discovering his father’s porno habits.
Speaking to DiversityRife discussed a partnership with Netflix:
“For someone to come from another level to be like, “Hey, we like what you’re doing. We like what you have done for yourself. We would like to invite you to work with us.” It feels warm. It feels inviting. Netflix has been great about the whole creative process. They gave me the freedom to keep telling the jokes I want to tell and shoot things the way I want to shoot them.”
Numbers like these will cement Rife’s place in stand-up comedy, and we expect Netflix to want to lock down this golden goose as quickly as possible. Expect more special shows from Rife on Netflix in the near future.
