In 2020, Disney CEO Bob Chapek announced a “strategic reorganization” to prioritize “streaming services”. Yes, in 2019, Captain Marvel took $1 billion at the box office but cinema seats were so last year.
So now Disney and Marvel present The Marvels with a $260 million blockbuster.
But, if fans want to understand what’s going on, they need to sign up for Disney + and do some serious bingeing first.
As part of the bulk of the story, Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel is seen tag teaming with two streaming superheroes – Ms. Marvel’s Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani) and WandaVision’s Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris).
An interstellar war is playing out (stream Secret Invasion for details) that has Nick Fury (Samuel L Jackson) marooned on a space station manned by technicians in skimpy tracksuits.
So it’s off to the three superheroes to stop a disgruntled alien (Zawe Ashton) from doing something terrible to “space-time”.
Luckily, they have a secret weapon – a magic bangle that allows them to switch places during cheap CGI action scenes.
Disney+ nuts should get something out of this addition but casual fans will surely wonder if Marvel has gone into its own black hole.
