ten people found, including four injured
Four people were injured in an avalanche in Austria that prompted a massive search Sunday for a dozen winter sports enthusiasts, police said Monday.
The accident occurred around 3 pm at approximately 2,700 meters above sea level, in the Lech Zürz ski area in the Vorarlberg region (west).
The police, based on the skier’s video, initially reported “about ten people buried”, raising fears of a large toll.
200 people mobilized
In this group “being in the area of the path of the avalanche”, “one man could be saved”. “Seriously wounded”, according to a press release published overnight, he was taken to hospital in Innsbruck.
“It was only in the evening that the other people who appeared on the video came forward,” said the police. They were able to return to the station on their own. Three were injured.
No information was given about their identity.
Up to 200 people, supported by helicopters, were mobilized for several hours to take part in the search operations.
The rescuers had warned at the weekend against a high danger of an avalanche in this area as well as in the neighboring Tyrol, pointing out the fragility of the ice pack in a context of mild weather.
In recent years, in Austria, snow slides have caused an annual average of around twenty deaths.
