TCU, Arizona, Houston headline this weekend’s men’s college basketball winners and losers

These are tough times for TCU athletics. The Horned Frogs took the football world by surprise for the College Football Playoff Championship Game, and it turns out the Horned Frogs are pretty good on the hardwood too.

Kansas rarely loses at home, so a win in Allen Fieldhouse would have been something for TCU. The Jayhawks’ wire-to-wire dominance was something else entirely as the Horned Frogs handed KU its second-worst home loss of coach Bill Self’s tenure in Lawrence on Saturday . Shahada Wells scored 17 points to lead an even performance from the Horned Frogs, who shot 54.4% for the game while the Jayhawks shot just 39.0%. It was a big improvement over the Horned Frogs’ previous outing, a loss at West Virginia.

The Jayhawks, who also lost against archrival Kansas State during the week, will surely fall from their second place in the polls. There’s still a long way to go of course and KU is more than capable of making another run to stay in the mix for a No. 1 seed, but there are no days off in the Big 12.

Here are some other college basketball winners and losers after a busy weekend.

The Wildcats got arguably the other most important win of the weekend with a 58-52 victory over UCLA in Tucson. Arizona capitalized on its size advantage, effectively beating the Bruins at their own defensive game and ending their 14-game winning streak. The win capped off a successful weekend at the McKale Center for the Wildcats, who also knocked off Southern California on Thursday night by a narrow margin.

The Crimson Tide continued their winning streak with another comfortable win at Missouri in eight. Alabama knocked down 10 more shots from three-point range, bringing its season total to 195 made treys.

Big Ten teams in Hoosier State

It was a busy Sunday afternoon at the Basketballschmiede. Purdue got off to a fast start and then held its own against Maryland to maintain its distance at the top of the crowded league and will undoubtedly return to the top spot in the polls. But Indiana’s hard-fought win over Michigan State might have been even more important. The Hoosiers pulled away from the Spartans in the second half for their third straight conference win, and with several key players back to health, it’s starting to look like the team’s guard was a championship favorite last season. passed

The Blue Devils were happy to have Jeremy Roach back in action. He returned after three games with a foot injury and recorded 14 points and four assists to help Duke avoid Miami. After an up and down January, the win could serve as a catalyst for Jon Scheyer’s team to claim the ACC title.

Clemson still has a one-game lead in the ACC standings, but nobody in the conference is currently playing better than the Cavaliers. UVa knocked down 15 threes in Saturday’s road win at Wake Forest. The Cavs will be tough to beat in the future conference if they continue to shoot well to complement their signature defense.

New Mexico

The Lobos bounced back from their first two setbacks of the season, following last weekend’s big road win at San Diego State with an overtime triumph at home against Boise State on Friday . Those results, which should count as first-quadrant wins, will serve New Mexico well as the Mountain West is expected to receive multiple NCAA bids in March.

Saint Mary

The Gaels left Santa Clara and sit alone atop the West Coast Conference. They will be able to enjoy the perch for a few days now that they have some free time before heading to BYU next Saturday.

The Wildcats shot above the .500 mark with their third straight win in SEC play, handing Texas A&M their first conference loss, as the three-guard lineup with freshman Cason Wallace as the leading point again proved most effective proven for Britain.

All in all, the Cougars’ 56-55 loss at home to unranked Temple on Sunday won’t hurt Houston much, despite ample opportunities to pull it off. However, this result could damage the team’s case for the best place when it is again compared with candidates from stronger conferences. Incidentally, in addition to Houston, the Owls have their own wins against Rutgers and Virginia Commonwealth, but also losses against Wagner, Penn and Maryland-Eastern Shore.

Arizona State

The Sun Devils haven’t fared as well as their Grand Canyon State rivals, dropping both of their home contests to Los Angeles schools this week on the back of a four-game Pac-12 streak. Saturday’s setback against Southern California could be very damaging in a few weeks if both teams find themselves in bubble territory.

After a lackluster performance against Oklahoma State, the Sooners slumped again this weekend with a two-point loss to Baylor. That leaves OU 2-5 in the Big 12 with four of the losses totaling 10 points. At 11-8 overall, the Sooners are in precarious territory with a tough schedule ahead.

The Panthers have been one of the ACC’s pleasant surprises early, but Saturday’s home loss to a .500 Florida State squad could be tough to overcome given limited opportunities for quality wins . Instead of being a game behind league leaders Clemson, Pitt is now a three-game losing streak.

Technically, the Zags got a win on Saturday at Pacific. But the 99-90 result after a stunning home loss to Loyola Marymount did little to assuage concerns that this year’s defensively challenged Gonzaga squad may not be ready for a deep run in March.

The Atlantic 10 preseason favorites fell out of first place with a devastating loss to George Washington. Dayton still has the league’s best NET rating at 69, but the conference is still far from earning an at-large spot on their automatic qualifier.
