Rippl-Rónai dominates the Hungarian painting market
Virág Judit Gallery’s season-ending classic auction brought lifetime records and other exceptionally strong results. This time there is no shortage of artistic sensations either, and pictures that have not been seen for a hundred years have been put on the market.
During the evening, someone paid HUF 300 million for the masterpiece A Geszti Castle Garden by József Rippl-Rónai, which broke the artist’s lifetime record. The painting started at 160 million forints, so far this was only an example of one classic painting in the history of the Hungarian art market: Tivadar’s Mysterious Island by Kosztka Csontváry was also sold for a record price of 460 million forints in – Virág Judit. Another special feature of the auction, a late masterpiece by János Vaszary, Alassioi strand (Alassió beach), rose from a starting price of HUF 65 million to a lifetime record of HUF 165 million. The most expensive Vaszary painting sold so far was San Remo, which went under the hammer in autumn 2021, and was sold for HUF 160 million.
In 1938, a year before his death, János Vaszary created the picture by the sea showing the beach of Alassioi which shows a cavalcade of colors, which testify to the joy of life, but the painting disappeared from the eyes of the public. profession and the general public in the 1940s. experts have also made it likely that it still exists based on just one black and white image. As it turned out, the painting remained in perfect condition, in all its glory, and it was Hungary as a whole.
At the auction, which also featured other Hungarian masterpieces, the work of László Mednyánszky Csorba-tó went under the hammer, fetching 30 million HUF, Armand Schönberger’s City on the Hillside, which was sold for 46 million HUF by Anna Kelen , the head of the auction, the work of Sándor Galimberti with the name of the Apple. , which eventually sold for HUF 55 million, Mihály Munkácsy’s Portrait of a Woman, for which a collector gave HUF 44 million, and János Vaszary’s painting Bazársor in Viareggio, for which someone paid HUF 46 million.
