Popular Malayalam actor Kalabhavan Haneef passes away at 61

Popular Malayalam actor and the mimicry artist Kalabhavan Haneef has died at the age of 61. The actor was struggling with some respiratory disease and was undergoing treatment for the same.

Haneef was admitted to a private hospital in Ernakulam last week. The actor, who mostly contributed to Malayalam movie, is best known for his role in the critically acclaimed slapstick comedy film `Ee Parakkum Thalika`. Haneef, who worked in more than 110 films, is survived by his wife and two children Shahrukh and Sitara.

The actor was born in Mattanchery, Ernakulam, to parents Hamaza and Zubaida. Haneef has always been interested in mimicry. At a very early stage in his life, he started doing mimicry, and later he was a part of the theater. Later, he joined a professional mime company, Kalabhavan, which was a huge milestone in his career. Haneef also followed the Kalabhavan alumni practice by keeping the name of the organization for his screen name.

The actor worked with Nedumodi Venu and Raghvan, but it was when he toured with a troupe for stage programs that he gained popularity. Shortly after entering films, Haneef started doing supporting roles in films. While all his roles were loved by his fans, Haneef’s character in `Ee Parakkum Thalika` remained the fan favourite. Popular films of the actor include `Thenkasipattanam`, `Pandippada`, `Chotta Mumbai`, `Ustad Hotel`, `Maharaja Talkies`, and `Drishyam`, among others.

Haneef was not only a movie star but a recognizable face to television audiences. His roles in Minnuketty and Nadhaswaram made him a household name. He has been a part of shows like `Abi`s Corner`, `Comediyum Mimicsum Pinne Njanum`, `Manassiloru Mazhavilu`, and `Tilana Tilana`, among others. Haneef’s last film was `Jaladhara Pumpset Since 1962`, which released in August 2023. Minnukettu was a family drama that depicted the story of a father, his daughters and their struggle.
