Rushdie did not get Nobel again
Indian-origin British writer Salman Rushdie was in the race to win the Nobel Prize in Literature. However, this time also he did not get the Nobel. The stories written by him highlight different aspects of society through reality, imagination and satire.
Because of this he has had to risk his life many times. He is a writer who has been on the hitlist of Al Qaeda. Iran had issued a fatwa against the Prophet in 1989, accusing him of insulting the Prophet.
Due to this, there was a fatal attack on him in New York in August last year. The attacker tried to slit his throat. However, he somehow survived. For these reasons, Rushdie was said to be the most deserving person for this year’s Nobel Prize.
Rushdie’s most controversial book ‘Satanic Verses’
Salman Rushdie’s most controversial book ‘Satanic Verses’ was published in 1988. Because of this book, Salman Rushdie was accused of sacrilege of the Prophet. In 1989, Ayatollah Khomeini, the leader of Iran’s Islamic Revolution, issued a fatwa against Rushdie. Rushdie has written a fictional story in this book. Which is like this…
- Two film actors are going from Mumbai to London by plane. One of them is film world superstar Jibril and the other is ‘voice over artist’ Saladin.
- On the way, the plane is hijacked by a Sikh terrorist. After this the plane is passing over the Atlantic Ocean.
- Then the terrorists start arguing with the passenger. An angry terrorist detonates a bomb inside the plane.
- In this incident, both Jibril and Saladin are saved by falling into the sea. After this both their lives change.
- One day, some stories related to the life of the founder of Islam appear in the dreams of Jibril, who is heading towards madness.
- After this he thinks of establishing the history of that religion in a new way.
- Further, Rushdie has written the stories of his story’s characters Jibril and Saladin in such a manner that it was considered blasphemous.

Pakistan made a film on Rushdie – ‘International Gorilla’
In 1990, a film was made in Pakistan with Rushdie in the role of a villain. Named it ‘International Gorilla’. Rushdie was very sad about this. Not because he was shown as a villain in the film.
Rather, he was sad because the film was not banned. He hoped that more people would watch the film after the ban. Rushdie believes that because of the ban, his stories reached more people instead of fewer people.
Not only in Pakistan, there was a lot of uproar over Salman Rushdie’s book Satanic Verses in India too. India was the first country to ban this novel. At that time there was Rajiv Gandhi government in the country.
After this, Pakistan and many other Islamic countries had banned it. In February 1989, Muslims organized a large protest against Rushdie in Mumbai. 12 people were killed and more than 40 were injured in police firing on this demonstration.
