Is Tom Hiddleston Done Playing Loki in the MCU

There are spoilers for the Loki season 2 finale

Twelve years ago Tom Hiddleston made his debut as Loki in Thor. Few would have thought that his story would still be unfolding after so many years, and no one could have predicted that his story would be unfolding. Loki season 2. Not thinking about Hiddleston first listen to Thor play himself way back in the earliest days of the MCU.

Over that time Loki Hiddleston tried to invade Earth, he was responsible for his mother’s death, reconciled with his brother Thor and, courtesy of the Avengers scream with time i End gamehe became embroiled in a multifaceted battle to save the fabric of time.

Loki’s saga came to an epic conclusion in the second season finale, as he completed his character arc by obtaining the throne he had been dreaming of, albeit with a twist that he can never leave. Loki is now at the center of Yggdrasil, the master of the world, ensuring that the multiple timelines will no longer fall into chaos.

But is this really the end of Tom Hiddleston’s long MCU journey?

Will Loki return?

It’s worth pointing out that the Loki we’ve been following in the show is just one variant and that there are an infinite number of other Lokis out there in various shapes and forms. At least one is an alligator and we know they don’t all look like the Loki we know and love, but President Loki proved to be a lot like Hiddleston’s version of the character. So it would be pretty simple to write a multifaceted version of Loki into a story, but it remains to be seen whether that will actually happen.

It also appears that there are no plans for Loki season 3. In interview with Cinemablend Head Writer Eric Martin said that he considered the story now complete:

“We approached this as two halves of a book. Season one, first half. Season two, we close the book on Loki and the TVA. Where it goes beyond that, I don’t know. I just wanted to tell a complete, complete story over those two seasons.”

Our take is that if Loki were to come back it would probably be a very different version of the character, perhaps a version of the ‘Kid Loki’ we briefly saw in the comics. Loki season 1 who might team up with the Young Avengers?

Sylvie’s fate is also unclear. She finally got the freedom she wanted and it seems she can travel wherever she wants through TempPad. It is plausible that Sophia di Martino could fill Hiddleston’s shoes in the future Thor movies and it would be very interesting to see Thor dealing with a female version of his long lost brother. Di Martino had so much fun with the character, it would be a shame if his journey ended here, so Kevin Feige can find a way for his Loki to pop up in a future story.

Will Tom Hiddleston be back?

It’s possible that Hiddleston could be back as Loki in a few months. What if…? Season 2 has two episodes that could feasibly show: “What if Odin & Hela were against Wenwu?” and “What if … Avengers fought Surtur?” Hiddleston is currently not confirmed for the cast of season 2, but since he spoke to Loki in several episodes of season 1 we wouldn’t be surprised to see him back here as well.

Moreover? It’s not looking so good. Hiddleston has given no indication if he would return to any future MCU films or TV shows and right now it’s hard to see where he would be positioned. This Loki may play a role in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Secret Wars if we see a multifaceted destructive war Kang. However, it would take a lot of exposition to explain who the Loki God of Time is to viewers who haven’t tuned into the Disney Plus show.

So for now, let’s accept it Loki Season 2 is Tom Hiddleston’s final bow as the God of Mischief. It’s a great way to get off the stage and suddenly Tony Stark has a contender for the most heroic action in the MCU’s long history. But… we just want an “encore!”.
