Ian Livingstone: ‘Gaming is almost socially acceptable’ | Books | Entertainment

Comics and Games Lucca 2023 celebrating a lot this year.

“Lucca Games” is not only the 30th anniversary of the convention, but also – in general – the huge boom in popularity among the gaming community in recent years.

This creative title began in earnest in the mid-1970s in London with Sir Ian Livingstone, who (along with Steve Jackson and John Peake) founded Games Workshop and brought the greatest role-playing game to this side of the pond: Dungeons & Dragons.

Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk taking the halls of Lucca Comics and Games 2023, Sir Ian spoke about being one of the forefathers of role-playing games in the UK and Europe.

“I’ve heard a lot lately,” he admitted with a smile as he stared down a seemingly endless queue of people eager to get his autograph. “I’m just, kind, bowled over by the accolade.

Sir Ian was adding his memoirs, Dice Menreleased just for the first time in Italian (just for Lucca Comics and Games 2023).

Regardless of country lines, language or anything else, however, it all boils down to one thing for Sir Ian: “I love how games bring people together in a great social environment.” Speaking specifically about the medieval Italian city, he continued: “It’s just a beautiful place and center and city – and the people are nice and enthusiastic and excited about what’s happening here.”

Lucca Comics and Games takes over the city of Lucca for a whole week – indoors, outdoors, and at some of the city’s cultural landmarks. And it was here that Sir Ian received his own Lucca Walk of Fame plaque, joining the likes of Sir Patrick Stewart along the way.

Looking at the nearly 300,000 people who attended Lucca this week, Sir Ian jokes: “We’re almost at risk of being socially acceptable! [Gaming] it is finally being recognized as the great medium that it is. The whole culture of art and games and comics is really celebrated here, and more people should know about it.”

Going forward, Sir Ian believes the UK could follow in Lucca’s footsteps. “I think we should do something similar in the UK,” he said. “We have a video game convention, an art convention, comic cons. Roll it all into one, in this cultural mash-up; it’s something we should see in the UK.”

Until then, Lucca is the gaming hub he will be settling into for the week.

Comics & Games Lucca 2023 held between 1 – 5 November.
