Veteran lyricist Javed Akhtar, known for his liberal and progressive ideas, praised the Hindu community, saying that “democracy exists in India because of Hindu culture and tradition”. The poet made the statement while speaking at a Deepotsav program organized by Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) leader Raj Thackeray in Mumbai.
‘Hindus are generous and big-hearted’
Akhtar also expressed concern about the growing intolerance in society. He pointed out that although there have always been some intolerant people, Hindus, as a community, are generally seen to have a great charitable and open-hearted quality. He emphasized the importance of preserving this quality and not accepting the intolerance others may show. Furthermore, he asserted that the Indians learned from the way of life of the Hindus and that no one can leave that.
‘Proud to be born in the land of Ram and Sita’
Javed Akhtar, who calls himself an atheist, also said that he was proud to be born in the land of Lord Ram and Goddess Sita.
He also raised the slogan of ‘Jai Siya Ram’ at the event and said that ‘Ramayan is the cultural heritage of India’. He also cited the example of Bollywood’s cult film ‘Sholay’ and said that if the film was released today, there would probably be a huge controversy because of the dialogue with Hema Malini and Dharmendra inside the temple.
