All actors regret taking roles, but few are as open about not liking a project with Gwyneth Paltrow. In 2020 she was asked about her “favorite performance” and she didn’t even hesitate before calling one film a “disaster”.
This is 2001s Hal Shallow, a romantic comedy starring Paltrow opposite Jack Black. The concept is that Black plays a man who is hypnotized to see a person’s inner beauty, causing him to fall in love with a 300lb woman who he believes looks like the skinny Paltrow.
Hal Shallow aging is not good, if it was ever good at all. It has been described as an “endless parade of fat jokes” and just plain “cruel”. Paltrow herself seems to have realized this early on. Wearing the character’s prosthetic fat suit, Paltrow decided to go down to a restaurant and order a drink, describing what happened as “extremely lonely and really lonely and sad”, and that:
“I didn’t expect him to be so upset. I thought the whole thing would be funny, and then as soon as I put it on, I thought, well, you know, this is not funny at all.”
It seems that Paltrow really regrets taking the role, perhaps aggravated by her plus-size body that is used twice for close-ups to develop an eating disorder after the film. Ivy Snitzer went public with his story earlier this yearsaying she was “technically starving to death” and:
“I got very scared and became very small. I was like: maybe I’m done with the concept of Heroes, maybe I don’t want to be an actor. Maybe I’ll do something else.”
Well, viewers on Hulu are still laughing along with the movie, as it is just re-entered the top ten most streamed movies and it is climbing the chart fast. We suspect that Paltrow would prefer to seal this film in a box and throw it into the deepest ocean, so it’s unlikely that she’ll be happy that it’s still being sought after by millions of viewers.
