Kamal Haasan and his unfinished/rejected projects could create their own little Universe. Without building things up, you should know that we are talking about Rajkumar Santoshi’s Ghatak. If you know a little about Sunny Deol & Rajkumar Santoshi, you must be aware of the dramatic rise and fall of their epic friendship.
Back in 2010 (yes, we’re that old & attending entertainment forever), we did this kinda ‘relationship timeline’ article on both of them and even today, it serves as a fresh read if you want to know in detail what happened between the two of them.
Ghayal was produced by the Deol family’s production house, Vijaya Films, and it was Sunny Deol who introduced the world to the talent of Raj Kumar Santoshi. The production house had previously had a huge success in Betaab (also starring Sunny Paaji), and Ghayal even did a great business at the box office.
Kamal Haasan In Ghatak Was Safe!
Vijaya Films’ next film, Damini, was also a success, and Sunny Deol turned into a brand, a trusted star for the producers. On the other hand, Kamal Haasan, who was a famous star down south and, even in Hindi cinema, wanted to build his base. However, when Ghatak was announced, it had been over a decade since Kamal Haasan, who had not released a single film in the Hindi markets.
Ghatak Makers. bought a full page ad to announce Kamal Haasan’s return to the Hindi film industry. The ad reads, “Welcome back to the Hindi screen, returns happy enough. Kamal Haasan in Ghatak.”
He added, “Writer-producer-director Rajkumar Santoshi has signed Kamal Haasan to play the title role in Ghatak Santoshi Productions. Music RD Burman of charge. Lyrics: Majrooh Sultanpuri. The film will be shot on a start-to-finish schedule in May. Cast and other credits are being finalised.”
Sunny Deol Replaced Kamal Haasan, But Why?
The news was out, and everything was falling into place for the film, but suddenly, Kamal Haasan was out of the project, and was replaced by Sunny Deol. The reason given was that the film was being put on a more significant financial canvas, and therefore, the makers wanted to ‘play it safe’, so KH was not the right choice to support this film.
Yes, Sunny Deol came in and gave one of his most memorable performances, making the film a huge success as it collected a little over 25 crores back in 1996 (about 400 crores in 2023, after adding inflation).
Kamal Haasan’s Redemption Arc!
But do you know, Kamal Haasan, the same actor who was shown the back door probably because he was not considered a ‘safe star’, delivered a film in the same year (1996) that earned more than double ( worldwide gross) of what Ghatak collected. The film was an Indian film, and it made 60 crore+ (worldwide), which is equivalent to 1000 crore+ in today’s time (adjusted for inflation), and this was Kamal Haasan’s redemption arc.
