Amazon is continuing the animated superhero drama Invincible, based on the iconic comic book series by Robert Kirkman. Now, going into its second season, there is plenty of hype to see where the show will go next. Despite the fact that superhero television has overtaken streaming television, the show managed to become a huge hit in its first season.
The first season of Invincible focused on Mark Grayson, a teenager who is just starting to get his superpowers. He expected them because his father is Omni-Man, one of the most powerful superheroes on the planet. Although Omni-Man is loved by the world and his wife, he harbored a dark secret that was kept under wraps, starting with the secret murders of his entire superhero team. The truth is that he is an alien from a race of long-lived, ruthless warriors called the Viltrumites who seek to conquer the universe. When Omni-Man tries to convince Mark to join him in his operations to conquer Earth, Mark refuses, and a vicious fight ensues.
Throughout the season, various characters attempt to investigate and coordinate an attack against Omni-Man. This includes Cecil Stedman, head of the Global Defense Agency, and demon detective Damien Darkblood. However, Cecil is very calculating and sent Darkblood back to Hell to buy some time before Omni-Man’s multiple murders were revealed. Meanwhile, Cecil assembles a new team of superheroes, with Mark assuming his new title of Invincible. Mark has a hard time trying to get used to his powers and his violent fits.
There were plenty of weird side plots going on during the first season. Atom Eve, who has the power to manipulate atoms, struggles to come to terms with her powers and is very reserved, with her origins revealed in the post-season TV special. Rudy, the highly intelligent robot, has been tasked with being the leader of superheroes but he also tries to get a human body. Mark meets the strange Allen, the Alien, who is tasked by the Coalition of Planets to find a new home world for his people and have talks with Mark on the moon.
So what’s in store for Invincible Season 2? With Omni-Man having left Earth after Mark refused to join his Viltrumite Empire, it’s only a matter of time before they cross paths again. It is likely that Mark and Eve will find a relationship because they have both learned truths about how their parents viewed them. It is also likely that there will be fears of Viltrumites invading Earth which will leave Greater Dublin paranoid about how best to prepare a defence.
Invincible is executive produced by Robert Kirkman, Seth Rogen, and Evan Goldberg. The all-star voice cast includes Steven Yeun, Sandra Oh, JK Simmons, Walton Goggins, Zachary Quinto, and Zazie Beetz. The second season of the animated series is currently airing on Prime Video.
