US men’s soccer coach Gregg Berhalter has come forward to say that in 1991, when he was dating his future self, he kicked her during an argument.

Berhalter released long statement on Tuesday – the same day US Soccer announced it opened an investigation in the incident from three decades ago.

Berhalter said, “During the World Cup, an individual contacted US Soccer, saying he had information about me that would ‘take me down’ — an apparent effort to exploit something very personal from a long time ago to bring about the end of the relationship my with. US Soccer.”

US Soccer says it learned of the incident on December 11, 2022 – a week after the United States was kicked out of the World Cup with a loss to the Netherlands.

In his statement, Berhalter described what he did in 1991. “We had been dating for four months when an incident occurred between us that would shape the future of our relationship. One night, while out drinking at a local bar, Rosalind and I had a heated argument that continued outside. It became physical and I kicked her in the face. ‘her legs.”

“There are zero excuses for my actions that night; it was a moment of shame and one that I regret to this day. At the time, I immediately apologized to Rosalind, but I understand that she wanted nothing to do with me. I told my parents, family, and friends what had happened because I wanted to take full responsibility for my behavior. Rosalind also informed her parents, family, and friends.”

“While the authorities were never involved in this matter, I voluntarily sought advice to help me learn, grow and improve – one of the most valuable decisions I have ever made. To this day, that kind of behavior was never repeated,” he said.

Berhalter said he and his wife celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary last weekend.

Berhalter took over as coach of the US Men’s National Team in 2018 after the squad failed to qualify for that World Cup in Russia. He is the first man to play and coach the United States in a World Cup. He led the team to the 2022 World Cup – and the USA advanced to the knockout round.

His coaching contract was up until last month – when US Soccer says it launched “a complete technical review of our Men’s National Team Program.”

Berhalter said, “I look forward to continuing my conversations with US Soccer about the future.”

US Soccer says that with the review and independent investigation underway, it will announce who will coach the January Men’s National Team camp in the coming days.
