Data revealed in April 2023 that since the inception of Startup India, till February 2023, more than 92000 units were recognized as startups. The government launched the Startup India initiative on 16 January 2016. It was launched with the intention of creating a strong ecosystem to promote innovation, startups and encourage private investment in the country’s startup ecosystem. According to data from DPIIT (Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade), the number of organizations recognized as startups was 8635 in 2018, 11279 in 2019, 14498 in 2020, 20046 in 2021 and 265222. The entity is recognized as a startup under the Startup India initiative by DPIIT. Since the launch of the Startup India initiative, DPIIT has recognized 92,683 units as startups by 28 February 2023.
