International Day of the Girl Child: International Day of the Girl Child is celebrated every year on October 11 to promote the rights of girls worldwide by the United Nations (UN). International Day of the Girl Child was established. Talking about the history of this day, this celebration has started from the 21st century itself.

The International Day of the Girl Child was officially declared by the United Nations (UN) on December 19, 2011 through Resolution 66/170. The resolution recognized the need to address the various challenges faced by girls globally and to promote gender equality and empowerment.

The idea of a day dedicated to the rights and empowerment of girls grew out of the advocacy and initiatives of various organizations and individuals. Prominent figures including Malala Yousafzai played an important role in raising awareness about the importance of girls’ education and rights.

Commencement of Celebrations (2012):

The first International Day of the Girl Child was celebrated on October 11, 2012. The theme for that year was “An end to child marriage”, highlighting the issue of early and forced marriage affecting millions of girls worldwide.

Every year, the International Day of the Girl Child is celebrated with a specific theme, chosen to address a major issue affecting girls. These themes include “Empower Girls: Before, During and After Crises” (2020) and “With Her: A Skilled GirlForce” (2018). These themes are intended to draw attention to pressing issues and inspire action.

Promoting Gender Equality:

The International Day of the Girl Child serves as a platform to advocate for gender equality and girls’ rights in various aspects of life, including education, health care, protection against violence and opportunities for leadership and empowerment.

Global Celebration:

Around the world, governments, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and communities organize events and activities to celebrate the International Day of the Girl Child. These programs include workshops, seminars, art exhibitions and awareness campaigns.

Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):

The International Day of the Girl Child aligns with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, Specific Goal 5, which aims to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls.
