India dominates Asian Games: Gold medal in hockey, sweeps Japan in final

New Delhi: The Indian men’s hockey team has won the gold medal with a brilliant performance at the Asian Games. India defeated Japan in the final. The Indian team has also qualified for the Paris Olympics. India has won a medal for a record 16th time in men’s hockey. Out of these 16 medals, 4 are gold medals. South Korea won the bronze medal by defeating the hosts China. Pakistan, a sometimes legendary hockey team, did not get any medals.

In the 19th Asian Games held in China, India performed brilliantly in the very first match. The extent of the dominance of Team India in the tournament is estimated from the scoreboard. India thumped Uzbekistan 16-0 in the first match of the Asian Games, followed by a 16-1 drubbing of Singapore and a 12-0 drubbing of Bangladesh. India also defeated Japan 4-2 and Pakistan 10-10-2 in the group. The latter blanked Japan 5-1 in the final.

This is the fourth gold medal for the Indian men’s hockey team at the Asian Games. India had earlier won gold in the 2014 Asian Games.
