‘Worth looking at’: Martin Lewis shares discount code to get 30% off railcards | Personal Finance | Finance

Regular train users can get a 30 per cent discount on their railcard for a limited time.

Martin Lewis inspired listeners with his BBC podcast use code ‘ilovetrains’ to confirm at checkout on the Trainline ticket website to receive the discount.

With the code, the price of a one-year railcard will drop from £30 to £12, and a three-year railcard will cost £49 instead of the usual £70.

Passengers should use the code now as it will only be available until November 30 or until it has been used 125,000 times.

Mr Lewis said: “If you don’t have one of those, it’s worth a look.”

The discount code can be used on a number of rail cards including:

  • 16-17 Save
  • 16-25 Post Card
  • 26-30 Post Card
  • Network Rail Card
  • Dual Rail Card
  • Former Ancestor Card
  • Family & Friends Rail Card.

Rail fares could rise by eight per cent next year if the Government uses the same metric as last year to determine how much ticket prices will rise.

The Department of Transport set the cap on this year’s fare increases in line with average earnings growth for July 2022, which was 5.9 per cent.

The department previously confirmed that next year’s fare increases will be below the Retail Price Index inflation measure for July, which was nine per cent.

A spokesman for the Department of Transport said: “Following the Government’s biggest ever intervention last year to cap rail fare rises well below inflation, we will continue to protect passengers from cost of living pressures.

“We will not raise next year’s rail fares by as much as the July RPI figure.

“Any increase will also be delayed until March 2024, temporarily freezing fares for passengers to travel at a lower price for January and February.”
