One tip could save you £145 on your gas energy bill – and other ways to save money

Gas central heating is used to heat the house, it is needed for hot water, and sometimes for cooking, so how can you reduce the bills when all of these are necessary?

HomeOwners Alliance has put together top tips to save money on your gas bill.

Series

If the heat is turned all the way up and you’re walking around your house in bare feet and a T-shirt during the winter, that’s a key area where you can save money.

By wearing warmer clothes at home, such as cozy sweaters or cardigans, you can turn down the thermostat and save yourself money.

“Putting a sweater on it might seem obvious, but it’s also very effective,” noted the Home Owners Association.

Be coosy

For those who can’t face a cold house, consider turning on the heating in those rooms where you spend the most time.

If, for example, there is a certain room where you work from home, it would make sense to have the radiators on.

However, if the radiators are on in different rooms that you don’t use much, you could cut your gas bill by turning the radiators in those rooms to a lower setting or off completely.

“Alternatively, invest in a heated blanket and wrap yourself in that,” said the HomeOwners Alliance.

Turning the thermostat down

You can save up to £145 on your gas bill just by dialing the thermostat down by just 1C.

Move furniture

Another tip is to make sure there is enough space between the radiators and the furniture.

This will ensure that the heat given off by the radiators can circulate around the room effectively.

“And make sure there are no curtains hanging in front of the radiators either,” said the Home Owners Association.

Heavy curtains

Speaking of curtains, having heavy curtains closed when the sun goes down can help warm the house.

Fight drafts

Drafting the house will help keep the cold out and keep the heat in.

DIY draft without included foam strips is available at home stores that can be placed around draft windows and doors.

Drafting your windows and doors could save you around £45 a year, according to the Energy Saving Trust.
