Martin Lewis has shared an easy tip for getting discounts on Christmas shopping online from major retailers such as Amazon and eBay.
The savings expert told viewers of his ITV Christmas special to try and put their items in their basket and then ‘walk out’.
He explained: “Log in, put the stuff you want in the shopping basket and walk out. And often, within a few days, they’ll give you a discount.”
Hundreds of people write in to the show to say they’ve gotten great discounts from eBay, Amazon, Etsy and other online stores.
One New Look customer was offered a 25 per cent discount after leaving her items in her basket for a few days.
Another said they had bagged a number of discounts from eBay including a MacBook Pro going down in price from £240 to £180, saving £60.
Mr Lewis said: “It doesn’t always work but it’s worth a try.”
He also encouraged people to ‘stockpile’ their belongings around the house, to see if they could find anything they didn’t want that they could sell online.
He also encouraged shoppers to compare prices before buying, especially when buying more expensive items.
He mentioned Google Shopping and PriceRunner as good price comparison tools and warned that Amazon changes their prices constantly.
Those looking for a specific item may want to try sites like Love the Sales which highlight when an item is on sale at a discounted price, such as during Black Friday sales.
A mum recently told Express.co.uk how she saved £300 on her Christmas presents this year using a shopping app Basketwhich saves something she looked at and tells her when the price has dropped.
Helen, from Buckinghamshire, said she has also made some savings this year by bringing her own gifts, such as snow globes, rather than spending £20 to £60 buying them from a shop.
She also tells her friends and family what she wants so they don’t waste their money or panic buying something right before the big day.
She said: “When family members like my sister-in-law ask me what the kids want for Christmas, I usually think about what they have in common, like Lego, so they don’t have to get two separate gifts to buy. for the children.
“Video games or board games are other options for kids with a bigger age difference.”
