New Delhi: The Union coal ministry on Monday announced plans to increase India’s coal production to 1.404 billion tonnes by 2027, with an aim to increase it to 1.577 billion tonnes by 2030.
Current domestic production is around one billion tonnes each year. This increase in output is aimed at ensuring an ample supply of domestic coal to India’s thermal power plants, which is essential for the country’s growing energy needs.
The ministry also said that coal stocks at thermal power stations have been rising since October 16, and stand at around 20 million tonnes. Stocks at mines hit 41.59 million tonnes. Overall, including transit and captive mines, the stockpile has increased to 73.56 million tonnes, up 12% from the previous year’s 65.56 million tonnes.
“…Coal supplied to domestic coal-based power plant is about 821 million tonnes (MT) for the current year,” he said.
The ministry is also preparing for an expected increase in coal demand, which is estimated to reach around 400 million tonnes to support the additional 80 GW of thermal capacity projected by 2030. However, this figure may be adjustment based on future generation needs and the contribution. renewable energy sources.
To achieve these production targets, the ministry is planning to open new mines, expand existing mine resources, and utilize captive and commercial mines.
“The production plans for the year 2027 and 2030 will be much more than the likely domestic requirement of thermal power plants in the country, including the likely amount of additional capacity,” the ministry said in a statement.
He added that the ministries of coal, power and railways are working closely, resulting in ready supplies of coal.
The Ministry’s statement comes in the context of a strong annual growth of 13.02% in coal production, which surpassed the 8.99% growth in power generation from domestic coal-based plants. Demand for thermal power has increased by 20% in the past year.
In response to rising power demand, the government asked power generation companies to blend 6% of imported coal until March 2024 and ordered all imported-coal plants to operate at full capacity until June next year .
